Cornish Wave is Newquay’s only mobile surf school, but when it came to establishing a pad, we had to base ourselves on Headland Road, just a two-minute walk from Fistral Beach. We’ll tell you why we’re stoked to have ‘The Home of British Surfing’ on our doorstep, and what it has to offer you.
1) Culture & Events
Fistral is a vibrant and bustling beach, so much so that it stops feeling like the UK when you arrive. Home to the best sun tans north of the English Channel, Fistral regularly holds sports and music events such as Boardmasters and Electric Beach Festival.
Whereas overall the population of Cornwall doubles in summer, in Newquay, it quadruples! It’s one of the few places in the country with a climate and surf conditions good enough to convince board riders from milder latitudes to stay a while. Don't be surprised to meet Australian, South African and Spanish surfers enjoying the world-class waves that Fistral boasts.
2) The Beach
Picture the perfect beach - think long sandy shore, sunshine and sand dunes - then maybe some terraced bars and restaurants on one side... Sounds like California, looks like Fistral!
Fistral Beach is 750-meters long, situated between Towan and Pentire, surrounded by some prime, expensive looking real estate. On the beach you'll find the self-proclaimed "International Surf Centre", housing all the essential beachside facilities including the Fistral Beach Bar, two restaurants and a few ice cream and surf brand shops. All you need to look and eat like a Fistralian!
3) The Surf
‘The Home of British Surfing’ earns its name because it delivers good waves time after time. Fistral loves churning out waves, and on a good day the surf is phenomenal.
Even if you don’t fancy getting wet, it’s most definitely a beach for the spectators. Fistral is a daily showcase of the country's best surfers, body boarders, kayakers, jet skiers, stand up paddle boarders and powerboat racers.
Our instructors love using this beach for Surf Lessons, and even if you don’t know the first thing about surfing, we’ll show you just why this beach is world famous. If you’re going to learn to surf anywhere, you couldn’t do much better than Fistral Beach!
